"Into the Wild" is a biographical survival drama film directed by Sean Penn. The screenplay was written by Penn, based on the 1996 non-fiction book of the same name by Jon Krakauer. The film tells the story of Christopher McCandless, a young American who, after graduating from Emory University in 1990, abandons his material possessions and hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness. He hopes to exist in the natural world, free from the comforts and constraints of society.
As McCandless travels through the country, he meets various people who leave a lasting impact on his life. He meets Ron Franz (Hal Holbrook), an old man who becomes like a father to him; Tracy Tatro (Kristen Stewart), a young woman who falls in love with him; and Wayne Westerberg (Vince Vaughn), a boatman who helps him on his journey.
