During a hunting party, an accident—or perhaps an assassination attempt orchestrated by his enemies—leads to tragedy. (In some interpretations of the sad ending, Stroe is betrayed or killed just as he reaches his peak; in others, he survives but is deeply scarred by the loss of friends and the realization that political power is fleeting).

The story begins with Stroe Șoimaru returning to Moldavia after a period of exile in Poland. The ruler of Moldavia, , has been deposed. Stroe is a supporter of the Movilești family, but more importantly, he is a man who values the independence of his homeland.
