The story revolves around Avinash (Kamal Haasan), a deaf-and-mute man who makes a living as a stunt double for movies in Mumbai. Due to a series of comedic misunderstandings, he accidentally gets entangled with a gang of bumbling kidnappers. The gang, led by a desperate father (Nassar), plans to kidnap a wealthy man's son to pay for their own children's education. However, they mistakenly kidnap the wrong child—the illegitimate son of a corrupt police commissioner (Om Puri). What follows is a chaotic, laugh-riot ride on a train (the titular Mumbai Express) as the kidnappers and Avinash try to outsmart the police and each other.
