Eris, discovered in 2005, is a dwarf planet located in the scattered disc, a region of icy bodies beyond Neptune. Dysnomia, its moon, was discovered in 2006. The name "Dysnomia" comes from Greek mythology, meaning "lawlessness." This dwarf planet and its moon offer valuable insights into the formation and evolution of our solar system.
Future telescopes and instruments—both ground-based (extremely large telescopes) and space-based infrared and occultation campaigns—will improve size, albedo, and compositional constraints.
